KARUNANIDHI went to a temple in Vellore for purposes of philanthropy, not worship. Even so it attracted headlines in Tamil Nadu because the DMK patriarch is a symbol of atheist politics. That he should enter the premises of a temple and share the limelight with priests in saffron was enough to raise the question: In the ageless tussle between Brahminic Hinduism and its challengers, was the balance tipping in favour of Brahminism again?
The intellectual foundations of Periyar’s Dravida movement were rejection of God and the nurturing of Self-Respect. His call for the demolition of Brahmin hegemony transformed social and political equations in Tamil country forever. And yet one half of his modern-day inheritors is led by an undisguised Brahmin. The other half, already compromised by creeping influences of such early No-Nos as astrology, now witnesses its supreme leader supping with God’s chosen representatives on earth.
Not that there would be anything surprising if Periyar’s notions of Dravida Self-Respect succumb to the persistent pressures of Vedic certainties. After all, the far more powerful Jaina-Buddhist philosophies were overwhelmed too.
These highly evolved philosophies nurtured egalitarianism while the Vedic tradition insisted on segregation. One sought to elevate common people to higher social-spiritual levels through education; the other prescribed that the lower orders should not be exposed to learning. As it happened, it was the discriminationist school that prevailed over the equality line.
Odd? There are researchers who point to Buddhist and Jain temples that were either destroyed or built over during an era of resurgent Brahminism. But significantly, the triumph of the Vedic tradition was confined to India and Nepal while the ‘suppressed’ Buddhism spread far and wide, producing a great culture with its own art, architecture and sculpture and its own literature in Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan. And who can beat the Buddhist masters of the East in martial arts?
Perhaps early Jaina-Buddhist influences also explain the cultural differences between northern and southern India which do not fit into the simple Aryan-Dravidian compartmentalisation. While the basic scriptures of Hinduism are from the north, the south is home to the interpreters and the challengers— from Ramanuja and Madhwa to Basava. In such a soil, the earlier challenges from Jainism and Buddhism took root easily.
A new seminal book (Kerala History’s Basic Records by Puthussery Ramachandran) quotes inscriptions in ancient caves and temples to assert that before Brahmins arrived in southern India, Jains and Buddhists had established a flourishing linguistic culture in the region. The classical literary works of the Sangam period, from
Tolkapiam to Thirukkural, were products of a pre-Brahmin flowering. From 1st Century AD, there was a significant Jain presence in the West Coast. Al- Baruni, the traveller who arrived after Shankara’s Brahminic consolidation, recorded that people from Konkan to Kollam (Kerala) were followers of the Buddha. An example of what Kannada owes to Jainism is Pampa, the venerated Adi Kavi who, born to Brahmin parents, chose to become a Jain.
Dravidian politics may indeed be overwhelmed by Brahminic politics. But the literary-cultural glory of the south’s pre-Brahminic inheritance shall never fade. It’s pre-politics as well. Which makes it precious.

Sir,
TJS George has exhibited his ignorance when he attaches 'intellect' with the Dravidian movement. The fact is there is nothing brainy or intelligent about 'Dravidianism' but only 'cunningness' attached with it and the so-called Dravidian movement was started only to cheat the gullible and innocent Tamils and rule over them.
George's blabbering on Vedic civilisation arid its tradition exposes the Christian agenda of dividing the Hindus. He has also attempted to alienate Buddhism and Jainism from Sanathann Dharma, an attempt which had failed many times in the past.
George must know that even Buddhist educational institutions named "Gankasthanilms" taught Vedas and Upanishads. The eternal "Siddhars" have given immortal Tamil Works, and many of them were Brahmins and Sage Agasthiyar was one of them. Even the Jain and Buddhist works such as Silappathikaram and Manimekalai talk extensively about Brahmins and Vedic traditions, We have Brahmins in the list of Nayanmars and Alvars also.
We have had many Brahmin, Kshathriya, Vaishya and Shudra poets in Sangam literature. This clearly shows that all classes of people had access to education The Vedic civilisation never prohibited a section of the society from learning as imagined by George.
Varnashrama Dharma was practised not to segregate or discriminate as naively said by George, but for the progress of civilisation and development of the society. The ancient rulers always revered the Brahmins and Vedic scholars and treated them Ivith utmost respect. Only the Moghttls focused more on persecuting and liquidating the Brahmins as they believed that their elimination would lead to the destruction of civilisation.
While concluding his article, George has again blabbered that "Pre-Brahmin cultural-literary glory would not fade and its precious' pre-politics as well." The fact is the Brahmins have contributed immensely to the glorious status of the culture and literature in every part of this great nation.
Sir,
I refer to TJS George's piece "God, Karunanidhi and Pre-Brahmin glory". His divisive writings and hatred for Hinduism show that he is not an Indian at heart. He still considers himself an imported Syrian Christian. Syrian Christians came as refugees to Kerala and iiindus welcomed them with open arms. They flourished and became prosperous in all fields.
When the Portuguese came, they sided with the Portuguese Christians and back-stabbed Hindus. Still Hindus, treated them with warmth. Syrian Christians are the most prosperous community in India. Having prospered in Hindu India and having taken the Indian salt, T J S George is showing his true colours.
The Pope called St. Thomas as a myth created for the harvesting of souls in India. TJS never writes about this. There are historical records to show that the Santhome Church in Chennai was built on a Shiva temple. He never writes about this.
Kenneth Humphrey, a British theologian, wrote a book Jesus never existed. The book was published by Iconoclast Press, Uckfield, East Sussex, the UK. George would never write about this.
The commies open their umbrellas if there is rain in Moscow or Beijing. TJS never writes that during the Communist revolutions in Russia, China and other places, more than 40 million innocent citizens were massacred. What have the Communists done in Kerala? As a Syrian Christian Keralite, he is talking about Brahmin, non-Brahmin divisions. What a shame?
Coming to pre-Brahmin glory, George has exposed his ignorance. He lacks elementary knowledge of history and geography. Tolkappiar was a Tamil Brahmin. Thirugnana Sambandar, Manickavasar and Appar — who gave the great Tamil Devaram, Thiruvasagam were also Brahmins. In fact, 99 per cent of the Tamil literature, owes its origin to Brahmins. It is naive and stupid to separate Hinduism and Brahminism. The less we talk about the Buddhist atrocities in Cambodia and other places the better. George, why can't you emigrate to Burma, Sri Lanka or Cambodia? Again, most of the leaders in Tamil Nadu are not Tam Mans: EVR and Jayalalithaa being Kannadiglis, MGR a Malayalee, Karunanidhi, Vaiko, Vijaykanth, Arcot Veerasamy Telugus. So much for TJS's Tamil glory!

Dear Mr. Sinha,
We refer to "God, Karunanidhi, and Pre-Brahmin Glory", written by TJS George, journalist & advisor to The New Indian Express Group, and New Sunday Indian Express, Feb 23, 2008.
To introduce ourselves: Ours is a specialized research centre with emphasis on Tamil and Classical Indian literature. We have published around 150 books and monographs, and innumerable papers in Tamil and English. We have also guided students for research in literature, religion, heritage and architecture at both Doctoral and Post Doctoral levels .Students from India and far away Harvard University have utilsed our expertise. We have a rare collection of 70000 plus books and manuscripts in Tamil and other languages. To mention we also have two books authored by TJS George on "MS Subbalakshmi" and another book "Politics the first resort of Scoundrels".
How can we choose not to give a rebuttal to our friend TJS George, whom we used regard, when his analysis on "God, Karunanidhi, and Pre-Brahmin Glory" is based on Colonial Christian notions, faulty premises and biased data? This line of reply to TJS George is only a skeleton rebuttal without going to level 2 and 3.
Thanking You,
Regards,

Odd…Very odd! George!
By Dr. TN. Ramachandran, GP. Srinivasan & R. Subbarayalu
1. Philanthropy?
What has M.Karunanidhi to do with philanthropy? He wants to make his family a dynasty. For this purpose he leaves "no stone unturned, no wires unpulled and no cutlet uncooked". (Quote from Winston Churchill). Philanthropy never upset established traditions. It fosters them. His Tamil-New-Year innovation bespeaks his flair for flouting sacred Hindu traditions.
2. Is Karunanidhi an Atheist?
Who said Karunanidhi is an atheist, as the term is commonly understood. His sort of atheism is anti-Hinduism. He willingly participates in Iftar parties and sees his participation is highlighted in the media. Islam is dead against atheism.
3. Brahmin Hinduism a misnomer
There is no such thing as Brahminic Hinduism. Hinduism is Vedic and Agamic. Its denigrators, it is notorious, are Christian missionaries. These missionaries can take shelter in the Hindu modes of worship with a view to uprooting them.
4. Confessions of Max Muller:
Muller was employed to translate the Vedas and he himself has confessed that he has done enough to uproot the Vedas.
5. 'Yosur Vedam'
Veeramamunivar, popularly known as Beschi Padiriyar donned himself in a guise of Hindu sadhu to propagate his mission. Roberto De Nobili indited a Veda called" Yosur Vedam" (the Vedam of Jesus) all the while calling himself an Italian Brahmin. It is to be noted that all padres called themselves as Aiyars or Brahmins.
6. Gospel of Hatred
EVR advisedly fostered hatred towards Brahmins. He did not mince matters. However his contribution towards fostering self respect always bordered on his gospel of hatred and nothing else.
7. Myth of Brahmin Hegemony
Brahmin hegemony is a myth. Please see the complete works of Dharampal. His "Beautiful tree", and other works have debunked the myth which still holds the field as Dharampal's works are yet to become popular. It is well known that the missionaries are still doing their worst to draw an Iron-Curtain over his works.
8. Vedic Hinduism
Vedic Hinduism thrives by its inner spiritual strength. Persons in guise or disguise can neither advance nor retard its march.
9. Vedas are unimpeachable
The certitudes of the Vedas are unimpeachable. The reformist poet Bharathi declared that the ambrosial and sustaining strength inherent in the Vedic way of life should become ours.
10. Abuse of Power
Buddhism and Jainism declined as by their abuse of power; they stultified themselves. The Buddhist reign in Sri Lanka will not go unnoticed for a long time.
11. Does Segregation mean quarantine?
Does segregation mean quarantine? Healthy segregation keeps things intact. Such segregation is not destructive at all. (Rishis went into forests to live secluded lives. This far away from the maddening crowd was discovered by Ralph Waldo Emerson in the 18th century USA.)
12. Never cease learning
Hinduism believes in the maxim: Loka samastha sukhino bhavantu {let the whole world thrive in comfort}. Hinduism never closed its door to the less fortunate. The famous Hindu poetess Avvaiyyar appealed to the whole mankind thus: "Oduvathu Ozhiyel". Never cease from learning.
13. Equality line
Equality Line spoken by George is a figment of fevered imagination. The invention of duplicitous nomenclature is political gimmick.
14. What is odd? What does George mean? What happened to the 20 lakhs Buddhist viharas, stupas, temples, monasteries and their libraries that disappeared during the reign of Chairman Mao?
15. What happened to Bamiyan Buddhas?
What happened to the statues of highest of Buddhas in Bamiyan Afghanistan? What is the present state of Tibet? Where are the lamas hiding? Odd. Very odd. Before our eyes Nepal is being swallowed by aliens. (The Shaolin monastery is a show piece to display martial arts to foreign tourists and attract foreign investments).
16. AIT – a political myth
The Aryan Dravidian Dichotomy is again a political myth. It is panjandrums who perpetuate these pet shibboleths.
17. All three acharyas fostered Vedic and Agamic traditions
All three Acharyas Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva fostered the Vedic and Agamic traditions. Basava the Brahmin was rebel. His teachings captivated the downtrodden of Karnataka. However the situation in KARNATAKA is back TO SQUARE ONE.
18. Adi Samkara called Buddha as Emperor of Yogis
TJS. George is making comfortable assertions in the air. Many of Sangham poets were Brahmins. We are not going into the details. Tolkappier was a Brahmin. Valluvar holds righteous Brahmins in great respect. George conveniently forgets that the great Samkara himself was all admiration for Gautama Buddha. He hailed Buddha as the "Emperor of yogis".
19. Etymological meaning of 'Dravidian'
George says Dravidian politics may indeed be overwhelmed by Brahmin politics. What does the word Dravidian mean? The Dravidian Desa is the entire south, below the Vindhya ranges. Dravidian does not mean any other political party in whose names the word Dravidian is inserted.
20 Conclusions
What is Brahminic politics? Who are these unspecified politicians? There is neither 'Point' nor 'View' in the point of view of Mr. George …Odd very Odd indeed Mr. TJS George!

Anti-Brahminism and anti-Semitism are two forms of the same ethno-religious prejudice directed at an accomplished minority group who are perceived, wrongly, to be the cause of a nation's social and economic ills, or, otherwise, to be controlling a nation's religious, cultural, political, or economic destiny from behind the scenes in their own interest. Dr. Koenraad Elst, in Indigenous Indians: Agastya to Ambedkar, writes, "In fact, apart from anti-Judaism, the anti-Brahmin campaign started by [Christian] missionaries is the biggest vilification campaign in world history." Anti-Brahminism has become the dominant theme in the speeches and writings of Indian secularists of all sorts.
